How to Choose a Memory Foam Mattress

April 19th, 2009

What to Consider When Buying a Memory Foam Mattress
There are many bed technologies out there, but we recommend the memory foam mattress technology as the best of the bunch. However choosing the best memory foam mattress to suite your needs can be challenging. There are so many memory foam mattress companies and a host of different memory foam t technologies.

Memory foam is space age technology, originally developed by NASA to meet seating demands for space shuttle liftoff. The technology was very expensive a few years ago but manufacturing breakthroughs has seen a radical reduction in the prices. The technology gets its name for its ability to mold and conform to the shape of an object pressed against it. The shape is maintained for a period of time after the object is removed.

Memory foam/vico-elastic beds and mattresses are more expensive than traditional coil technology; however, the benefits far outweigh the costs. Note that the price of the particular memory foam product can make a big difference in its effectiveness and comfort ability. Good quality memory foam bed will be a bed that evenly distributes your weigh regardless of the position of your body or how you sleep. Higher quality memory foams will even respond to your body heat, becoming even softer.

Memory foam lifespan typically ranges between ten to twenty years, depending on manufacturer quality. This means that memory foam has a much higher lifespan than do coil technology. The possible downsides to memory foam mattress technology is the strong odor that initially permeates the foam – this odor disappears with time, and the initial weightless feeling that most memory foam owners experience for the first few days.

When memory foam technology first came out, the only brand available was tempurpedic. However, many companies offer memory foam mattresses and this competition has forced the price to come down many times. The main companies on the market are Sealy, Simmons, Dormia, and Sleep Aids. Tempurpedic still is one of the major memory foam mattress providers and produces some of the top quality mattresses – the price is not cheap, however. Note that while you can get cheap memory foam mattresses, you get what you pay for. Top quality memory foam mattress can make a big difference in sleep quality over the cheaper ones.

Not all memory foam mattress are the same in make and quality. For example, there are variations in the density levels of memory foam. In general, the higher the density is, the more you can expect to pay. Most products you find range from 2.5lbs density to 5lbs density. Memory foam density is the how much 1 cubic foot of it weighs. the higher the density, the higher the memory foam’s firmness. You want to try and avoid any memory foam having less than 3.5lbs density, as memory foams at this level of density are not as comfortable. Be very wary of memory foam that advertised at very low prices – the memory foam may be either a bad mix, low density, or very low quality memory foam.

The average person will probably be most comfortable between 3.5lb and 5lb density. While 5lb density may be too firm for some, might be perfect for others. They key is to see what fits your personal comfort level.
Besides the issue of memory foam density, quality and mix types, you need determine what size mattress you need.

Ask yourself the following questions about the mattress size:

1. How much bedroom space do you have for the new mattress?
2. How many people will be sharing the bed?
3. Are people satisfied with the space they have in the (old) bed.

These are the standard sizes you can choose from:

Twin 39 x 75
Twin XL 39 x 80
Full 54 X 75
FUL XL 54 X 80
Queen 60 x 80
King 76 x 80
California King 72 X 84

Some Other things to consider
Another thing to consider, besides your mattress, is the foundation of your bed. If your mattress needs a replacement, there is a big chance that your mattress foundation will need to be changed as well. If you decide your mattress is in need of change, make sure you dispose of it. That last thing you should be doing is passing bad sleep on to someone else. Don’t sell it or pass it on to family members. Get rid of it. You should also consider getting some bed accessories to make your sleep the best as it could be. When getting a new bed, it’s often time to find a pillow as well.

There are many things to consider when buying memory foam mattresses, pillows, toppers, and beds such as memory foam quality, the density of the foam amongst others. Ask a lot of questions, do a lot of research, and only buy memory foam mattresses that you can return. There are many places to buy memory foam products form; however, if you want to best prices, you should opt to buy memory foam mattresses (and pillows, toppers, etc) online. Physical stores cannot match the online prices and if you do enough research online, you don’t need to talk to a salesperson. Many online memory foam retailers offer full 30 day return policies as well. So follow this guide to buying a memory foam mattress and you’ll be getting the best possible sleep, once you get your new memory foam mattress.
